AR Mountain Biking Glasses

RESEARCH
This is a concept design project created as part of an academic collaboration between Keren Sasson and Hila Lapin. Together, we designed AR glasses for mountain biking and explored how they could enhance the rider’s experience in the field.
Our main question was: How can the rider’s experience be improved while riding?
Through observations and interviews, we identified key challenges mountain bikers face.
One major issue is identifying dangers while riding. Off-road conditions are unpredictable, with sharp turns and wet surfaces leading to slips and crashes.
This project examines how AR technology can help riders stay focused on the trail while improving safety and performance.

In interviews, riders emphasized that field conditions change daily due to weather, making each ride unique. Additionally, looking down at a navigation device while riding at high speeds can be dangerous, as even a glance away from the track can lead to accidents.

The research focused on how to help Enduro and all-mountain cyclists stay focused on the track to avoid dangers.
We created a list of functional requirements for AR goggles, like a power switch, audio interface, emergency activation, and water resistance. We also explored technologies like heads-up displays and Ride Vision, which provide real-time hazard warnings.

SKETCHES
After considering four options, we chose AR goggles as the best way to improve the mountain biking experience and made sketches in 3D and 2D.
